Iceland: Three Different Takes

The last couple of years there have been several photo projects on Iceland. It is no doubt an amazing and unique landscape and most of the projects have been quite inspirational. Nearly all of them you get a sense of the ruggedness one must have to live (or photograph) in such a harsh environment. A few photographers whose work really caught our eye are Kevin Cooley, Lauren Lancaster, and Justin Fantl.

William Eggleston: Democratic Camera-Photographs and Video, 1961-2008 @ LACMA

LACMA is to present the most comprehensive U.S. retrospective of Photographer William Eggleston, October 31, 2010 through January 16, 2011.

Eggleston is regarded as a master of color photography and for his portrayal of quintessentially American scenes.

Amongst many things, the exhibition will also focus on the use of his photographs on numerous album covers, and his inspiring influence on filmmakers of today.

According to the hosts:

New York City is indisputably the cultural capital of the world. In the 20th century, the nexus of relevant art was the island of Manhattan. But the 21st century has seen a definitive shift, making Brooklyn the new epicenter of literature, music, art, and photography.

Capture Brooklyn, a new initiative by the New York Photo Festival, is a juried exhibition of contemporary photography that seeks to capture the spirit and essence of Brooklyn, and to showcase the vitality of photography happening in the hottest part of New York right now!

Drawn from submissions received online through August 29, 2010, 80 photographs will be selected and exhibited at The powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The show's official opening will take place during this year's Dumbo Arts Festival (September 24-26), an event that draws over 150,000 visitors over 3 days - and will remain open until October 15, 2010.

It is our hope that Capture Brooklyn will not only serve to acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic photography happening in this borough, but also encourage and nurture the growth of Brooklyn's artistic renaissance.

Brilliant Videos by Photographer Dwight Eschliman

Wow, these three videos by Photographer Dwight Eschliman are very clever. The still images stand well on their own, and in each instance it had me guessing what was about to happen. Although primarily a still life photographer, these powerfully demonstrate the endless potential for creativity that the hybrid cameras have brought about. He really manages to make the transition seamless. In his own words, describing the transition into video:

As the world of photography evolves and emerging technologies expand the world of visual possibilities, developing video capabilities has become a priority in my studio. In the world of motion video, sports are typically shown with dynamic quick cuts. As a photographer, I love the static shot. I saw an opportunity to u...se the static camera angle to create films that are essentially animated stills. Each frame can stad alone.

Six Images from Ansel Adams "Lost Negatives"

As I'm sure many of you have already heard, antique glass-plate negatives thought to be taken by the American Photography legend Ansel Adams were found by a Fresno man in a garage sale! You can now buy prints at the Lost Negatives website. There is still a little dispute of their authenticity, but for the most part I am buying the evidence that these were Ansel Adams originals.

Portuguese by birth, Edgar Martins grew up in Macau, China, where he published his first novel entitled 'Mäe, deixa-me fazer o pino'. In 1996 he moved to the UK, where he later completed an MA in Photography and Fine Art at the Royal College of Art. He has exhibited extensively throughout Asia, America and Europe and has received numerous awards for his photographic and literary work. Edgar Martins works and lives in the UK.
